Be Prepared

Preparation for Culmination Day


In Preparation for Culmination Day Field trip:


• Review expected behavior and ground rules.

  1. Permission slips from parents and collection of fee.

  2. Make sure students dress appropriately; this is an all outdoor experience, rain or shine.

  3. Sunscreen, bug spray, hats recommended on all hot days, dress in layers & jackets on cold days.


Recipes of some Native American foods:


Corn Cakes
2 cups cornmeal
2 cups boiling water
2 teaspoons shortening
1 teaspoon salt

Mix cornmeal, salt, shortening. Pour in boiling water. Beat well and when cool shape with hands into thin cakes. Put on cookie sheet and bake in hot oven (400 degrees) for about 30 minutes or until crisp and brown.

Indian Fry Bread
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
Warm water to make dough
Cooking oil (fat) for deep frying

Mix dry ingredients together. Adjust enough water to make dough the consistency of biscuit dough. Roll out on lightly floured board. Cut into small half moon shapes or circles. Drop into deep, hot fat (360 degrees) and cook until brown all over. Drain on absorbent paper and serve hot.


**Sweet Indian Bread is made by making a glaze sugar, water and maple flavoring and pouring it over hot bread.
